About the Artist

Painting with Emotion
DARYL HOSICK ARTIST
"I strongly believe that art should create an emotional response -- that is that the purpose of art is to transfer an emotion from the artist to the viewer."
|
The emotion that I attempt to transfer is the feeling of excitement, wonder and amazement that comes from closely observing nature -- physically being in the natural environment and taking in all that is going on.
|
And the best way to capture this feeling is to set up and paint outside -- directly in front of the natural scene. The French term "en plein air" reflects this idea and simply means "in open air".
Many of my paintings are created "en plein air". These paintings are relatively small in size (up to 11 x 14 inches) because it is difficult to keep the wind from blowing away large canvases. Also the paintings must be completed in a relatively short time because the light changes. (and bugs bite, and bright sun burns).
By necessity the larger works are created in the studio but the paintings completed "en plein air" form the basis of these studio paintings and the plein air feeling is, hopefully, transmitted to the larger work.
I am very active in groups and organizations promoting plein air painting including the Santa Cruz Oil painters and the Monterey Bay Plein Air Painters Association -- where I am a signature member and serve on the board of directors as "exhibit coordinator" and "members education coordinator".
"I feel very fortunate that I am able to live in an area with an abundance of exciting natural beauty."
My favorite material is right in my back yard -- scenes that seem to flow back in both distance and time -- gigantic redwood trees, wildlife, free flowing streams, remnants of old decaying buildings and, of course, the ocean. Close to my home is the excitement and beauty of the high mountains, the Sierra Nevada mountain range. All of these subjects provide opportunity for expressing emotion like the weather conditions created by the ocean In the high mountains I feel that I can see forever and I can think about the pioneers living and working in the old buildings.
"I believe that the more you know the more power you have to accomplish what you want. It requires great skill to capture the feeling and emotion of a scene and transfer that feeling and emotion to your canvas"
I have completed numerous art classes and workshop including workshops given by very well know artists -- Gerald Brommer, William Scott Jennings, David Gallup, Ray Roberts, Mark Farina and Paul Kratter. I also regularly attend life drawing exercises at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
And I try to pass my artist knowledge on to others. I have produced a one hour DVD on "artist perspective" which is available from Amazon and I have posted videos on you tube on how to improve paintings. I am nearing completion of a book describing a new way to see and apply perspective in fine art, with emphasis on plein air painting.
"I am always amazed at the similarities between painting and playing music. Both art forms are attempting to communicate emotion"

I am a working musician and have performed in jazz festivals all over the world with the Cell Block 7 Jazz Band. I have been fortunate to experience the feel and culture of far off places while performing in the Edinburgh Scotland Jazz Festival, the Bohem Festival in Hungary, Bude Festival in England and an extensive tour of Taiwan. |
.
"The best compliment you can give my work is to look carefully and feel the emotion -- perhaps by recalling your own experiences while enjoying nature"
